Public Interest Disclosure

What is the purpose of the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2002?

The purposes of the Act are contained in its long title. These are:-

  • to encourage and facilitate disclosures of improper conduct by public officers and public bodies
  • to protect persons making those disclosures, and others, from reprisals
  • to provide for the matters disclosed to be properly investigated and dealt with, and
  • to provide all parties involved in the disclosures with natural justice.

How does the Council administer the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2002?

Council has adopted the procedures to be followed by public bodies to ensure that it is able to respond in the appropriate manner to any concerns raised under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2002. The procedures are available on this website.
